Learning Objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basis of structural safety, to structural analysis and to the design of steel and R.C. structures.
Prerequisites
The student can sustain the exam of Structural Analysis and Design only after:
1. passing the exam of Mechanics of Structures
2. completing the design projects with a positive vote of the reviewer.

Teaching Methods
Frontal classroom instruction and weekly reviews of the assigned projects.
Type of Assessment
The exam consists of two parts:
- the first part consists in a written work on the analysis of an indeterminate structure;
- the second part concerns the discussion of steel and r.c. structures and the review of two designs prepared by the students.

Course program
Generalities on structural analysis: structural safety, loads, load conditions and combinations, allowable stress method, limit state method
Steel structures: mechanical properties of structural steel, local buckling and cross-section classification, tension members, compression members, beams, beams with compression and moments, trusses and bracings, bolted connections, welded connections, design worked examples
Statically indeterminate structures: force method, displacement method (rotational stiffness, translational stiffness, independent displacements, auxiliary restraints, stiffness matrix)
R.C. structures: modular ratio n and transformed section, ultimate limit states for normal and shear stresses, serviceability limit states (normal stresses in the elastic field, cracking, deflections), development, anchorage and splicing of reinforcement in R.C. members, worked examples.
