Objectives: To provide methodologies for the definition of the reference scenarios of natural hazards and of the measures for hydraulic protection of the territory and human activities.
Topics: Advanced methods for flood risk characterization. Criteria for the definition of non-structural and structural mitigation measure of flood risk. Monitoring system plan. Hydraulic structures, territory and human activities interaction. Regional, national and international laws.

Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide methodologies for the definition of the reference scenarios aimed at the characterization of natural hazards, with particular reference to flood risk.
The course will also provide the knowledge and necessary tools to analyze the interaction of structures and infrastructure, and human activities in general, with the environment, in order to define interventions for the protection and preservation of human activities, the enhancement of natural resources with particular reference to water and soil resources.
Prerequisites
Probability and statistics. Fluid Mechanics. Hydrology and Hydraulic Structures.
Teaching Methods
The course is developed of lectures and traditional classroom discussions, seminars by experts and practical applications possibly on specific topics, primarily dedicated to the advanced analysis of some specific topics of the course.
Revision activities are also part of learning process. Revisions can eventually be carried out collectively with all the students during the course.
Further information
Lectures notes, in-depth documents, useful dataset, can be available during the course development on the Moodle platforms at UNIFI http://e-l.unifi.it/
During the first weeks of the course the enrollment to the platform is required to the students who intend to attend the course.
Type of Assessment
In agreement with the teacher will be defined a case study to be investigated among the topics covered in class or suggested by the teacher.
The evaluation will be based on the presentation and discussion of the case study and an oral exam on the topics covered in class not objective of the investigation.
Course program
Generalities on tools for the characterization of environmental reference systems (water, soil and subsoil, atmosphere, ....).Definition of natural hazards.
Civil protection instruments. Socio-hydrology for promotion of risk perception.
Flood risk maps production. Interventions of structural and nonstructural defense.
Territory protection and defense against flood risks: methods for scenarios definition. Regional analysis of extreme hydrological events. Floodplain risk management.
Interaction of hydrographic network and crossing infrastructures (i.e. bridges).
Introduction and general information about climate change and the interaction with human activities.
Reservoirs characterization and management. The "sheet of conditions" for reservoir operation and maintenance. Storage capacity protection and reservoir sedimentation management. The environmental impact assessment.
In addition, legislation and regulation at national and regional level will be also presented.
