NOTES:
- Studente are invited to enroll the examination list using the online procedures;
- any change in classroom, date or time will be displayed at S.Marta.
- The exam is an oral discussion on the work project submitted by the student, followed by question on the entire course program. The work project is based on the applicatioon of the concepts of fluvial hydraulics to a study case; it consists of a manuscript which describes the problem and the approach to solve it
Course program
The aim of the course is to provide the basic principles of the hydraulic processes in natural rivers. Main topics are:
Free surface flow over fixed bed: steady flow, backwater analysis, flow resistance in mountain and alluvial rivers, effects of vegetation on flow resistance.
The catchment and the fluvial system: the concept of self-forming channel, the fluvial sediments and their properties.
Interaction between flow and movable bed: treshold condition for sediment motion, Shields parameter, bed forms and flow resistance. Training works for bed and banks dynamic control.
Unstady flow: De Saint Venant equations, simplified models of flood routing, method of characteristics.
River survey, resistance to flow in alluvial rivers, effects of bed mobility on discharge-stage curve. Regime theory . Local phenomena in alluvial rivers. Training works and design criteria. Hydraulic risk: basic concepts and definitions, analysis of hydraulic risk, works for reducing hydraulic risk, flood storage structures.
