Learning Objectives
The aim of this course is to provide a window on the most innovative issues relating to Internal Combustion Engine field.
Topics relating to the combustion process, the turbocharging, the pollutant and the acoustic emission control are dealt considering both the scientific literature and the main innovations on the market.
The following capabilities will be basically acquired:
- Applying knowledge and understanding related to the analysis and optimization of mechanical devices and systems, as well as to their innovation also through the development and improvement of design methods, constantly confronting with the rapid evolution of mechanical engineering.
- Applying advanced knowledge and understanding to operate effectively, individually and as members of a group, having a clear understanding of the context of engineering problems and of the interdisciplinary implications that characterize mechanical engineering.
Prerequisites
Basic elements on ICE (see the Internal Combustion Engine course)
Teaching Methods
The course syllabus is carried out by means of lectures with the support of slide projection.
Some seminaries will be offered with the collaboration of engineers coming from the R&D department of automotive companies. Moreover a visit to an engine producer will be organized.
Type of Assessment
The exam is based on an oral discussion on generally 3 topics of the syllabus. It allows to evaluate the comprehension of the reciprocating connections of the main concepts. Moreover the appropriated use of the technical words has taken into account.

- Introduction and quick recall on the main ICE concepts: Main engine parameters, Power and Efficiency, characteristics curves, Partial load, Combustion
- New approaches for the combustion process: Low Temperature Combustion
- Engine supercharging: Main developments, TC-engine coupling
- Two stroke engine: new developments
- Exhaust emissions: Generation of the main emissions, Regulations, Referenced cycles
- Acoustic Emissions
- Heat exchange in engine components
- Biofuels
- Hybrid systems
