Learning Objectives
The objective of the course is to provide the tools for studying the operating conditions of the Gas Turbine for aero-propulsion
CAPACITY ACQUIRED AT THE END OF THE COURSE:
Able to assess the performance of a propulsion system
gas turbine based under real operating conditions.
With reference to the knowledge (CC) identified for the course, reference is made to the following descriptors:
cc3: Knowledge, understanding and use of scientific (computer and other) tools specific to the field of mechanical engineering design. cc11: Knowledge and understanding of the machinery sector deepening the aspects properly connected with systems for energy production and transformation, with reference also to renewable energies and/or aspects related to propulsion systems. Understanding the role of different energy technologies in ensuring the environmental and economic sustainability of production.
While in reference to the competences acquired (CA) identified for the Course reference is made to the following descriptors:
ca7: Applying knowledge and understanding related to the definition, design and implementation of researches useful for understanding problems, through the use of both theoretical and experimental models and techniques. ca8: Applying knowledge and understanding related to the appropriate interpretation of the results of experimental tests, verification calculations and complex theoretical simulation processes, through the use of the computer, applying the acquired experimental, modeling, mathematical and informatics bases. ca11: Applying improved knowledge and understanding to present in written, verbal and, if necessary, multimedia form, their arguments and the results of their own study or work, with characteristics of organic and technical rigour. ca12: Applying adequate knowledge and understanding to understand English texts.
Prerequisites
Concepts of energy systems and turbo machinery with particular reference to
gas-turbine cycles and multistage gas turbines. Concepts of aeronautical propulsion

Lessons and exercises in the classroom and simulation laboratory
Type of Assessment
Evaluation and discussion of laboratory project and training, developed during the course

The laboratory provides the necessary theoretical knowledge and simulation tools to carry out a numerical study of a real aeronautical engine, followed by a discussion of the elaborate and the results obtained. The student must demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of own elaborate, knowing how to evaluate autonomously the work made and the results obtained, or be able to respond in a contradictory way to any annotations and/or disputes on the solutions adopted and the relative results. The particular complexity of the treated engines requires rather articulated simulations and models, implementing the knowledge indicated in cc3,11. During the discussion of the final exam the skills about 7,8,11,12 are verified, in a decidedly operative way.
