Course Content
Basic information is provided concerning the operation of measuring instruments for RF applications, such as spectrum analyzers, power meters and vector impedance meters. The fundamental characteristics of ancillary equipments (cables, attenuators, terminations, directional couplers) are discussed. A specific focus on EMC measurements and related instrumentations (LISN, EMI receivers, antennas, impulse and ESD generators, anechoic chambers) is also offered.

Learning Objectives
To provide basic knowledge about operation and use of electronic instrumentation for measurements in the frequency domain, measurement techniques adopted for radiofrequency. The capability to correctly perform measurements is developed through practical laboratory sessions.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of circuit theory (lumped electrical models), electromagnetic fields (distributed electrical models and radiation) and basic electrical measurements (analog and digital oscilloscope, multimeter, measuremet uncertainty).

Type of Assessment
The examination is aimed at assessing the theoretical and practical competences that are necessary in order to carry out a reliable measurement of RF signals. Specifically it will be verified the knowledge and skills necessary to reliably use a receiver (spectrum analyzer) and a power meter, a vector impedance meter, a scalar or vector network analyzer. Competence about both the operation of measuring instruments and ancillary equipment will be assessed. The ability to evaluate the reliability of a measurement result and to identify the inherent non idealities associated with any measurement process are particularly appreciated.

RF attenuators, directional couplers and bridges, power dividers and splitters. Spectrum analyzers (operation and response to sinusoidal, impulse, noise and noise-like signals). Power meters. Vector impedance meters. Antennas.
