TEST OFA

The knowledge test is a non-selective assessment required for students enrolling in a three-year bachelor's degree program with open admission at the School of Engineering of Florence. It does not prevent enrollment but is intended to evaluate the initial preparation in the core subjects of the chosen program.

What is the TEST OFA for Engineering?

For ALL Engineering degree programs at the University of Florence with open access, students are required to take only the entrance knowledge assessment test (also known as the TEST OFA), which does not in any way restrict enrollment.

It is STRONGLY recommended to take the test by August 31 of the year in which you intend to enroll.

Only for the professional bachelor’s degree program in [LP-01] Techniques and Technologies for Construction and Territory, which has a limited number of places, there is also a selection test before enrollment. For more information about the selection test, please consult the program webpage.

The procedures for taking the assessment test and any other relevant information are described in the CALL FOR THE ENTRANCE KNOWLEDGE ASSESSMENT TEST.

Additional Learning Requirements (OFA – “Obblighi Formativi Aggiuntivi”) are assigned to students who enroll:

  • in Engineering degree programs and obtained a total TOLC-I score below 16/50 (excluding the English section) and/or below 8/20 in the Mathematics section;
  • in professional-oriented degree programs and obtained a TOLC-LP Mathematics section score below 4/10.

It is possible to enroll even with assigned OFA, but these must be fulfilled in order to take exams.

All students who have been assigned OFA can complete them by following the OFA Recovery Pathway.

To find out whether you have been assigned OFA, simply check your student record and compare it with the information provided here: https://www.ingegneria.unifi.it/p183.html#OFASUP

I have just graduated from high school

If you wish to enroll in any degree program of the School of Engineering at the University of Florence and have not yet taken any TOLC-I, this is the right time to take the entrance knowledge assessment test.

For students enrolling in the academic year 2025–26, TOLC tests taken in 2023, 2024, and 2025 are considered valid.

It is important to take the TOLC-I before classes begin, since—even though you may enroll and attend without issue—you will not be able to take any exam until you have participated in at least one TOLC-I session.

Alternatively, you may request an exemption (FULL or PARTIAL) if you meet one of the conditions specified in the Admission Call.

To take the assessment test, please proceed as follows:

  1. Prepare for the TOLC
  2. Practice for the TOLC
  3. Choose your test center and date
  4. Register and take the TOLC
  5. Check whether you have fulfilled the OFA
  6. Consult the Admission or Selection Call for your program
  7. As soon as possible, proceed with ENROLLMENT

The result of the TOLC will be recorded in your student transcript as soon as you complete your enrollment in one of the degree programs of the School of Engineering, according to the deadlines indicated in the ADMISSION or SELECTION CALL.

If you achieved a sufficient score, from that moment on you will be able to take all exams in your degree program without restrictions.

If your TOLC score is insufficient, OFA will be assigned to you, but in any case you can:

  • freely enroll in any degree program of the School of Engineering,
  • take all exams in your program, except those related to the Scientific-Disciplinary Sectors (SSD) MAT/03, MAT/05, MAT/08, FIS/01, FIS/03 (e.g., exams in Mathematical Analysis, Geometry, and Physics) until you have fulfilled the OFA;
  • fulfill the OFA by following the OFA Recovery Pathway or by taking another TOLC (you may take one per calendar month).

VERY IMPORTANT: If you do not take at least one TOLC, you will not be able to take any exam.

I am in the second-to-last or final year of high school

If you are currently attending the fourth year or have started your final year of high school, you can already take the TOLC and complete the Additional Learning Requirements (OFA) in advance.

The School of Engineering of the University of Florence recognizes TOLC results taken up to two years before the year of enrollment, as well as those taken during the same enrollment year. For students enrolling in 2025–26, TOLC tests taken in 2023, 2024, and 2025 are valid.

In this case, we recommend the following steps:

  1. Prepare for the TOLC
  2. Practice for the TOLC
  3. Choose your test center and date
  4. Register and take the TOLC
  5. Check whether you have fulfilled the OFA
  6. Consult the Admission or Selection Call for your program
  7. After graduating, proceed with ENROLLMENT

The TOLC-I score is stored by CISIA and will be automatically retrieved once you enroll in a degree program at the School of Engineering of the University of Florence.

If you take more than one TOLC-I, the best score will be considered for fulfilling the Additional Learning Requirements (OFA).

I am transferring from another school or university

If you are transferring from a degree program in another School of the University of Florence or from another university to a program within the School of Engineering, you may request a FULL or PARTIAL exemption as specified in the Admission Call.

If you do not meet the requirements for exemption, you must take at least one TOLC.

IMPORTANT: TOLC tests are administered from February to November each year. It is essential to take the TOLC by November in order to sit for exams starting from the first session (January–February).

If you must take the TOLC, we suggest the following steps:

  1. Prepare for the TOLC
  2. Practice for the TOLC
  3. Choose your test center and date
  4. Register and take the TOLC

I already hold a Bachelor's or Master’s degree

If you already hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree and wish to enroll in a degree program of the School of Engineering, you may request a FULL or PARTIAL exemption based on your previous qualification and the evaluation of the degree program to which you wish to apply.

Otherwise, you can take the TOLC-I by following these steps:

  1. Prepare for the TOLC
  2. Practice for the TOLC
  3. Choose your test center and date
  4. Register and take the TOLC

I am enrolled and have been assigned OFA

If you have been assigned OFA (Additional Learning Requirements), that is, if your student record shows the information indicated here, then you must follow the OFA Recovery Pathway.

Alternatively, from February to November, you can take another TOLC-I and achieve a score of at least 16/50 in total, including at least 8/20 in the Mathematics section. The English section is excluded from the total score calculation.
