How to graduate

General information for graduating students

To take the final exam, the student must be up to date with the payment of fees or contributions and must have acquired the number of credits required by the study regulations of their course. For the School of Engineering, exams and any internship must be completed by the 15th day from the start of the graduation session (the exam date corresponds to that reported on the record, while the recording can occur later).

Only students enrolled in the academic year of the relevant graduation session may submit a graduation application.

This page summarizes all the useful information for submitting the application, managing the thesis, and the discussion in 6 operational steps.

1. Choosing the supervisor and starting the thesis

After choosing the supervisor (Bachelor) or two supervisors (Master), the student must complete and submit the "Start of Thesis" form (see forms).

  • Download the form for your course (Bachelor / Master / Thesis in company forms).
  • Fill in the form and collect signatures (also via email).
  • Upload the form to the dedicated Google form (see forms).

Behavioral guidelines

The Behavioral Guidelines for Graduations (effective from 18/09/2023) apply. Every graduate must sign a declaration in the thesis start form assuming personal responsibility for respecting the rules in the guidelines, aware of the civil and criminal liabilities in case of violation.

2. Submitting the graduation application online

The application must be submitted exclusively online through the Submit Graduation Thesis Application service during the periods indicated in the graduation session calendar. For FAQs about completing the application, consult the FAQ.

Once the application is saved, the supervisor will receive an email notification to approve the application. The supervisor will log into the online thesis application management page to complete the approval. Once approved, the student receives confirmation via email.

3. Consolidating and paying the graduation fee

  • After supervisor approval, the graduate must consolidate the application (click “Close and submit application”) by the indicated deadline. Completion of the AlmaLaurea questionnaire is required; otherwise, the system blocks consolidation. Pay attention to the "co-supervisor" field, adding additional supervisors if needed. More details are available here.
  • Pay the stamp duties according to the payment slip.
  • After consolidation, data can no longer be modified: for Bachelor courses no changes possible; for Master courses, only the title and final thesis upload can be modified.
  • Consolidation of the application concludes the procedure for Bachelor students.

4. Uploading and validating the thesis

Bachelor theses: the document must comply with the Course Regulations (art. 12). No archiving is required.

Master theses:

5. Session and discussion

  • Session dates are published in the Graduation Session Calendar.
  • Notifications (board composition, location, date, and time) are published about a week in advance in the Graduation Boards section.
  • Graduating students must arrive at the scheduled time regardless of alphabetical order.
  • Bring the presentation on a USB stick and arrive early for slide upload.

6. Calculating the final grade

  • Consult the Criteria for determining the graduation grade specific to your course.
  • Criteria for averages and calculation algorithms are published for the different course classes (DM 509/99, DM 270/04, previous regulations).
  • Entry averages are prepared by the Graduation Office exclusively for the boards; they will be sent to students via institutional email if possible.

Support for bibliographic research

For correct thesis preparation, students can request assistance from the library for bibliographic research and source management.

  • See the page: Thesis bibliography: get help at the library.
  • Appointments can be booked during library opening hours:
    Monday–Thursday 8:30–19:00 | Friday 8:30–17:00.
  • For information: Phone 055.2758968 or ask directly at the library.

Contacts and final notes

  • All official communications are sent to the institutional email address: firstname.lastname@edu.unifi.it.
  • For information not included on this page or technical issues: ingegneria.tesi.online@unifi.it

Withdrawal from the session

If the application has been approved by the supervisor but not yet consolidated, simply do not consolidate: you are automatically excluded from the session.

If the application has already been consolidated, it must be canceled using the “Cancel application” button in the online system.
