Course Content
Data networks, network kinds and topology. Network devices. Telecommunication Network Management, protocols and software. Management organization, human factors. QoS management. Network Security, attacks and countermeasures for wired and wireless networks. Analysis and defence systems.
No specific textbook. The presented material (PDF slides) are available through the class website.
Reference material (i.e., papers and online available documents) will be linked as well.
Learning Objectives
To have a solid basic knowledge of the issues concerning the Telecommunication Network Management, with particular attention to data networks. The standard network management systems will be presented, along with their use.
At the end of the class the student is expected to be able to plan and manage a data network.
A special attention will be devoted to the network security issues, as is the possible attacks and the countermeasures.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of TCP/IP and telecommunication networks.
Teaching Methods
Frontal class mainly, laboratory experiences and seminars for some very specific topics.

- SNMP protocol - manager-agent paradigm, Management Information Base - MIB
- ISO/OSI management areas: Performance, security, accounting, configuration management
- Network performance measure tools.
- Advanced network management: QoS requirements and provisioning
- Security: ciphering and VPNs
- Security: Cryptography
- Attacks to wired and wireless networks, the most common ones
- Analysis and defence mechanisms
