Course Content
Methods, tools and regulatory aspects concerning EcoDesign of industrial products and technologies.
- Mahendra S. Hundal, Mechanical Life Cycle Handbook, 2002.
- JRC-IES, ILCD Handbook: General guide for Life Cycle Assessment - Detailed guidance

Learning Objectives
The aim of the course is to transfer knowledge on main methodologies, tools and standards functional to the improvement of the ecoprofile of industrial products and technologies during their whole life-cycle (from materials extraction and processing, through manufacturing and use stages, up to the end-of-life management).
Provided knowledge:
Systematic knowledge of key aspects of the mechanical design of industrial engineering and associated methods; for the latter, an understanding of which are the most suitable in order to define a product and its environmental characteristics. The technology of usable materials, the study of parts and assemblies, the technologies for their production, are the areas of knowledge and understanding. Understanding of applicable techniques and methods and their limitations including awareness of the non-technical implications of engineering practice.
Application capability:
The ability to choose and apply appropriate analytical, modelling and verification methods to design and analyse machinery and industrial products, included: analysis of the environmental characteristics of metallic and polymeric materials for the production of components, taking into account conditions of use; analysis of production systems including economic and environmental sustainability. The ability to apply one's own knowledge to identify, formulate and solve industrial and mechanical engineering problems, defining environmental specifications and constraints, and to solve them using established methods, thus implementing engineering projects, appropriate to the level of knowledge and understanding developed. Projects may concern products, devices, machines, energy systems, automatic systems.
Prerequisites
Nothing.
Teaching Methods
Lectures and tutorials.
Further information
Possibility of organizing educational visits to events and companies operating on the topics covered by the course.
Type of Assessment
Oral test. The questions are of a theoretical and applicative nature regarding the areas of environmental sustainability of industrial products and technologies. The student must demonstrate that he has acquired a basic knowledge of the topics, ability to approach problems, and familiarity with the use of methodologies and tools concerning the subjects being taught.
Course program
The course is divided in two sections:
1) Theory:
• Introduction to sustainability issues of industrial product and process (terminology, European policy, directives, standards, labels,...)
• Approach to the EcoDesign of industrial products
• Methods and tools for EcoDesign and Life Cycle Assessment
2) Exercises and laboratories
• Application of methods and tools of EcoDesign to case studies
• Application of Recyclability and Recoverability Calculation method to case studies on transportation field
• Modelling and environmental assessment of industrial products and technologies life-cycle
