The course will give a comprehensive overview of design criteria for plants aimed at treating water and wastewater. The several units present in the treatment plants for both water and wastewater will be analyzed and advanced design criteria will be illustrated. Most common and used treatment trains for water, wastetwater and solid waste treatment will be deeply analyzed and explained with particular attention to the design criteria.At the end of the course the student should have the capacity of:- using the main laws concerning wastewater treatment plants, water supply treatment plants;- assess suitable treatment trains for urban and industrial wastewater;- perform the design of wastewater treatment plants sections;- asses suitable treatment trains for water supply treatment plants depending upon the quality of the water source;- perform the design of water supply treatment plants.

Students will be asked to carry out (alone or in small groups up to 4 people) one project on water or wastewater treatment and one project on solid waste treatment or confined landfill.Outcomes of the activity will be:- assessment of a suitable treatment train for a specific case study;- block diagram, P&I;- design of sections included in the treatment train;- drawings and technical report.Students elaboration will be regularly revised by professors.

Oral examination. The examination will start from the discussion of a project related to water or wastewater treatment) carried out by students. All topics included in the extended program can be discussed during the examination.

Wastewater treatment plants:
- types of wastewater and their characteristics; stathistical analysis; flowrate and concentration values used for the design;
- preliminary treatments (screenings, grit removal; oli removal);
- equalization and pumping;
- primary treatments (primary settling with and without chemical addition);
- biological treatment with typical treatment trains;
- sludge treatment trains.
Water supply:
- typical treatment trains for surface water and gorundwater;
- stripping of VOCs, filtration; ion echange, disinfection.
